Land Use Change Net Removals Associated with Sugarcane in Brazil

چکیده

This work brings a refined estimation of the land use change and derived CO2 emissions associated with sugarcane cultivation, including changes in management practices land-use carbon stocks, over last two decades for Brazil’s center–south north regions. The analysis was carried out at rural property level, considering spatially explicit conversion data. With refinements, we found net removal 9.8 TgCO2∙yr−1 cultivation areas 2000–2020 period, which due to expansion poor quality pastures (55% gross removals), croplands (15%) mosaic (14%) areas, transition from conventional burned harvesting unburned (16%). Moreover, 98.4% existent agricultural areas. Considering all within sugarcane-producing properties, is even larger, 17 TgCO2∙yr−1, vegetation recovery. suggests that public policies private control mechanisms might have been effective not only deforestation but also induce removals cultivation. These results indicate production system products as contributors sector Brazil should be considered both bioenergy sustainability evaluation.

Mapping Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Removals from the Land Use, Land Use Change, and Forestry Sector at the Local Level

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions resulting from the Land Use, Land-Use Change, and Forestry sector (LULUCF) are estimated and reported in National Communications to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). By definition, the LULUCF sector is a “greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory sector that covers emissions and removals of greenhouse gases resulting from direct human-induce...

Climate change, land use patterns and deforestation in Brazil

This paper aims at evaluating the impacts of climate change on land use patterns in Brazil. To this purpose, we specify and estimate an econometric land use model to assess how climate variables affect land allocation decisions according to three types of use: cropland, pasture and forestland. Based on the econometric model estimates, we then simulate how farmers will adapt their land use choic...

Land Use Change Explorer:

This paper describes a tool prototype named as Land Use Change Explorer, which was developed to allow different users to generate "GKD process tracking” (discovering land use change patterns) and “GKD process steering" (understanding uncertainty in these patterns as the process unfolds). The Land Use Change Explorer was implemented based on the GeoInsignt approach, previously described in Wacho...

Modeling Land-use and Land-cover Change

Models are used in a variety of fields, including land change science, to better understand the dynamics of systems, to develop hypotheses that can be tested empirically, and to make predictions and/or evaluate scenarios for use in assessment activities. Modeling is an important component of each of the three foci outlined in the science plan of the Land-use and -cover change (LUCC) project (Tu...
